An openBIM hackathon is a short, intensive event where teams prototype digital solutions for the built environment using open standards such as IFC, BCF, bSDD, IDS and related APIs. The goal is to create innovative proof-of-concept workflows and tools.

Software developers, BIM specialists, students, researchers, designers, engineers, product managers and anyone curious about digitalisation in AEC/PropTech. You don’t need to be a coding expert to join.

No. It helps, but it’s not required. We’ll provide a short introduction to openBIM concepts and the available datasets, tools and APIs at the start of the event.

Not necessarily. If you don’t code, you can still add a lot of value. Teams need different skills:

• Development (backend, frontend, scripting)
• BIM / domain expertise
• UX/UI and product design
• Business / storytelling / pitching

Anything that uses openBIM standards for the built environment, for example:

• Data validation and quality tools (IFC, IDS, bSDD)
• Dashboards and viewers for IFC models
• Automation scripts for data modelling
• Sustainability or facility-management workflows based on openBIM data
• We’ll also share challenge themes to inspire you

No. We welcome both individuals and groups. We’ll run a team-forming session at the beginning, enabling solo participants to find teammates. You can also come with a pre-formed team if you prefer.

Typically 3–6 people. This keeps teams small enough to move fast, but big enough to cover multiple skills.

You can use any tools that respect the spirit of openBIM and interoperability: open-source libraries, commercial software, online services, etc. We encourage using open formats and sharing your results in an open way when possible.

By default, the team owns what it creates. The results of the work done during the hackathon must be publicly available in form of public GitHub repository. The organizers may ask for permission to showcase your project (screenshots, pitch video, Git repo link) in public communications. If not sure about IP policy, contact the organisers in advance.

• We’ll provide Wi-Fi, tables, power outlets and a shared working space.

The participation fee covers access to the venue, Wi-Fi, coffee and snacks, lunch (sandwich). Accommodation, travel, breakfast and dinners are not covered.

The main language of the event, presentations and communication is English (unless stated otherwise). Teams are free to work internally in any language they prefer.

Yes. We expect all participants to be respectful, inclusive and collaborative. Harassment or discrimination of any kind is not tolerated and may lead to removal from the event.

Drinking alcohol or use of drugs is not permitted at the venue.
